The Dar Rapid Transit (DART) is an Executive Agency established through GN.120 of 25th May, 2007 under the Executive Agency Act No. 30 of 1997 and its amendments with the main objective of providing high quality and most efficient public transport service in Dar es Salaam City featuring with modern high-capacity buses operating in exclusive
lanes. The DART System is planned to be implemented in six phases covering 140.1 km. The development of the entire system was incorporated in the Dar es Salaam Urban Transport Master Plan of 2008 which guides developments up to 2030. The current operating DART System Phase 1 was financed under the Second Central Transport Corridor Project (CTCP2) supported by the World Bank. The system has significantly reduced travel time compared to the former Daladala operations. For instance, on the 15.6 km, of Kimara-Kivukoni corridor has been reduced from over 2 hours to 45-50 minutes. Despite some teething issues, the service is generally regarded as an important beneficial upgrade of the City public transport. The design of the second and third phases of the BRT system was supported under the CTCP2, and the infrastructure for the second phase is being supported through funding by the African Development Bank (AfDB) in 2 partnership with the Africa Growing Together Fund. The implementation of the third and fourth BRT phases is to be supported by the Dar es Salaam Urban Transport Project (DUTP).
