by Ajira

The Higher Education Students’ Loans Board (HESLB) has announced the first batch of students who have been awarded loans for the 2024/2025 academic year. This first phase includes over 21,509 first-year students pursuing undergraduate, law, and postgraduate degrees, with a total loan value of TZS 70.78 billion.

Students to Access Information via SIPA HESLB Executive Director Dr. Bill Kiwia stated that all students who applied for loans for the 2024/2025 academic year can access detailed information about their loans through their ‘SIPA’ – Student’s Individual Permanent Account. “Today we have started providing loan information to all groups, those who have been awarded loans, and those whose applications we are still working on… each applicant will get their information on the same account they used to apply for the loan, there is no need to visit HESLB offices,” said Dr. Kiwia, adding that the allocation of loans to diploma and postgraduate students is ongoing.

HESLB Prepares Disbursements Dr. Kiwia said HESLB has begun preparing payments for both new and continuing students who are loan beneficiaries, stating that the goal is to ensure funds reach universities on time. “This year, the government has allocated TZS 787 billion for a total of 245,799 students, including over 88,000 first-year students who have been allocated TZS 284.8 billion,” said Dr. Kiwia, adding that the 2024/2025 budget has increased by TZS 38 billion, equivalent to 5.1%, compared to the 2023/2024 budget of TZS 749.4 billion. This year, the minimum loan amount per beneficiary has also increased to TZS 3.0 million from TZS 2.7 million last year.

Call for Universities to Submit Exam Results Regarding the responsibilities of universities, Dr. Kiwia reminded universities that have not yet submitted the exam results of continuing student-beneficiaries to do so, in order to enable HESLB to prepare payments on time. “There are a few universities that have not yet submitted results, we have reminded them and we insist that they expedite the submission of results so that we can complete the payments for students who have passed to continue their studies,” said Dr. Kiwia.

Second Phase Announcement The HESLB Executive Director said that the second phase of the list of students awarded loans for the 2024/2025 academic year will be announced next week.
