Longtime partner INGOs Lutheran World Relief (LWR) and IMA World Health (IMA) have founded Corus International to spearhead new collaborations and innovations across the global development, aid, public health, and private sectors that achieve transformational change and build self-reliance.

LWR is seeking a Nutrition Lead for an upcoming USAID-funded horticulture opportunity in Tanzania. The five-year project will focus on increasing the commercialization, inclusiveness, and competitiveness of horticulture market systems in Tanzania.

Summary of the Position

The Nutrition Lead will provide vision and leadership for country-led scale up of effective, integrated, sustainable nutrition sensitive policies and interventions in horticulture. The Nutrition Lead will introduce nutrition sensitive activities to address the causes of malnutrition by supporting improvements in horticulture diversification and nutrient quality of crops grown throughout the country. S/he will raise community awareness and consumption of diversified, nutrient dense, fortified, and nutritionally adequate foods.

This position based in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and will report to the Youth Inclusion Lead.

Duties:

  • Advocate for improved nutrition-sensitive food and agriculture policies with local government and private sector processing companies
  • Promote demand for nutrient-rich crops to improve the consumption of a dietary diversity of food at the household level
  • Promote increased production and good value chain practices to increase access to quantity and quality of diversified foods available in the markets
  • Promote women’s economic empowerment, including women’s earnings and budget management skills, to increase equitable roles in decision making in farm management and use of resources for nutrition-related expenditures
  • Raise community awareness and engagement in the identification and consumption of diversified, nutrient dense, nutritionally adequate foods, including engagement of local leaders and influential groups to promote positive nutrition-sensitive behaviors
  • Support the target population to adopt healthy eating practices by introducing a range of innovative social and behavior change activities
  • Coordinate capacity building and technical support for beneficiaries on agri-nutrition issues, including nutrition-sensitive agricultural technologies
  • Work with the M&E Officer to monitor adoption rates of new agricultural practices and food consumption methodologies, dietary diversification, and nutrient-dense diets across different gender and age groups
  • Promote appropriate methods of harvesting, handling, preservation, processing, and storage to maintain the nutrient content of food and meet food safety standards

Qualifications:

  • The position requires a competent and experienced person with the following attributes:
  • Master’s degree in nutrition, public health, or agriculture with five years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study with at least eight years of relevant experience
  • Expertise in nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food systems
  • Experience designing soft skills curricula and facilitating capacity building workshops (especially with low literacy populations) focused on nutrition-sensitive agriculture
  • Ability to lead nutrition analyses and recommend appropriate nutrition-sensitive interventions for agriculture programs, including designing and implementing tools and approaches to integrate nutrition support throughout agriculture programming
  • Experience with behavior change communications strategies and activities to improve dietary diversity and improve health and nutrition outcomes
  • Demonstrated record of developing and maintaining strong working relationships with various levels of key stakeholders, from global nutrition networks and ministry-level counterparts (i.e., Ministry of Health or Agriculture) to community-level actors
  • Demonstrated capacity to lead the collection, analysis, and production of high-quality project reporting products
  • Fluency in English and Kiswahili in oral and written communication
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Expertise and experience implementing complex donor funded gender awareness nutrition-sensitive agriculture programs
  • Experience managing USAID-funded grants, cooperative agreements, and/or contracts
  • Experience using digital technologies for message dissemination
  • Ability to travel within the country as needed
  • Willingness to support Lutheran World Relief’s mission
