List of Courses Offered at Institute of Social Work (ISW)

The Institute of Social Work (ISW) is a Public Higher Learning Institution accredited by National Council for Technical Education (NACTE) and established by the National Social Welfare Training Institute Act. No. 26 of 1973 (as amended by the Miscellaneous Act. No. 3 of 2002). It offers training in the fields of Social Work (NTA level 4 -9), Human Resource Management (NTA Level 4 – 8 and Postgraduate), Business administration (NTA level 4 – 8), Industrial Relations and Public Management (NTA levels 4 to 8 and Postgraduate) and Community Work with Children & Youth (NTA level 4).

List of Courses Offered by the Institute of Social Work (ISW)

Basic Technician Certificate Programmes –

(NTA Level 4) in:

  1. Social Work (Dar es Salaam and Kisangara Campus)
  2. Business Administration
  3. Labour Relations and Public Management
  4. Human Resource Management

Minimum Entry Qualifications

    1. The applicant must have at least four (4) passes (in any excluding religious subjects) at Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE).

OR

  1. The applicant who holds at least a six (6) months certificate from any institution recognized by NACTE or NVA Level 3.

Ordinary Diploma Programmes (NTA Level 5):-

  1. Social Work (Dar es Salaam and Kisangara Campus)
  2. Business Administration
  3. Labour Relations and Public Management
  4. Human Resource Management

Minimum Entry Qualifications

Direct Entry:

    1. The applicant must have at least a minimum of one (1) principal pass and a subsidiary at Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) in appropriate subjects that will amount to a minimum of 1.5 points (i.e. at least one E and S). In addition, the applicant must have four (4) credits from Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) – excluding religious subjects.

Equivalent Entry:

    1. The applicant with a Basic Technician Certificate from an institution recognized by NACTE with a minimum GPA of 2.0. In addition, the applicant must have Four (4) passes from Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE) – excluding religious subjects.

OR

  1. The applicant who holds a Certificate in Nursing/Midwifery and related courses, and Certificate in Education (Grade III A) with an average of C from institutions recognized by NACTE. In addition, the applicant must have at least four (4) passes from Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (CSEE)- excluding religious subjects.

Bachelor Degree Programmes – (NTA Level 7- 8) in: –

  1. Social Work
  2. Business Administration
  3. Labour Relations and Public Management
  4. Human Resource Management

Postgraduate Diploma Programmes in:-

Law, Mediation and Arbitration (Evening Session)

Minimum Entry Qualifications

The applicant must have a Bachelor Degree or Advanced Diploma in relevant fields or its equivalent in Social Science with PASS grade.

Master Degree Programme (NTA Level 9) in: –

MASTERS DEGREE IN SOCIAL WORK

Minimum Entry Qualifications (Social Work)

One-year Programme

  1. Advanced Diploma / Bachelor degree in Social Work with 2.7 GPA or Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work. The applicants in this category will only be required to undertake the Advanced Modules that carry 120 credits.

Two-year Programme

  1. Advanced Diploma / Bachelor Degree in Social Sciences preferably, Community Development, Sociology, Health Sciences, Psychology, Education, and any other related discipline with 2.7 GPA. In addition, Applicants in this category (Without Social Work background) will be required to undertake both Foundation and Advanced Modules that carry 260 credits.

MASTERS DEGREE IN STRATEGIC HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Minimum Entry Qualifications (Strategic Human Resource Management)

    1. Possession of at least a second class Bachelor Degree or Advanced Diploma in Human Resource Management or any other Social Science field(s) of study with minimum of 2.7 GPA from recognized higher learning institutions.

OR

  1. Possession of unclassified degrees with an average credit of B or above. A candidate holding a Bachelor Degree or Advanced Diploma whose classification is not easily distinguishable by the Institute shall be required to have his/her qualifications clarified by the Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) before being considered for an admission.
