The National Prosecution Service (NPS) was established as an independent public office through Government Notice No. 49 of February 13, 2018, to exercise the constitutional powers vested in the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to oversee criminal justice in accordance with Article 59B of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania of 1977. In carrying out his constitutional duties, the DPP shall, among other things, uphold justice, prevent the misuse of fair trial procedures, and safeguard the public interest under Section 8 of the National Prosecution Act No. 27 of 2008.
