The Ministry of Defence and National Service (MoDNS) was officially established in 1995. Prior to that, between 1972 and 1989, the functions of this Ministry were performed by the Ministry of State in the Second Vice President’s Office. Between 1989 and 1995, the Ministry’s functions were under the Minister of State in the President’s Office. In addition, before the Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar, the Ministry was known as the Ministry of Defence and Foreign Affairs.
