The Texas Physician Assistant Board lets qualified people work as physician assistants in Texas by giving them a license. In Texas, physician assistants must have a license and work under the supervision of one or more supervising physicians. If they prescribe drugs, they must also have a prescriptive delegation agreement with their supervising doctor (s).

The Texas Physician Assistant Board’s Licensure Department is committed to the Board’s mission by making sure that the people of Texas get good health care by upholding the standards set by law and Board rule and by quickly processing licensure applications.

Before You Apply

Before sending in their applications, people who want to become physician assistants should use the links on the left to learn more about who is eligible, how to apply, and what documents and fees are needed. Please keep in mind that the application process in Texas has two steps: pre-licensure and licensure. During pre-licensure, the applicant’s documents are collected, and the applicant will be told by mail or e-mail, if an address has been given, which documents have been received and which ones are still needed. After all the documents have been sent in, the application is considered complete, and the process of getting a license can start. During the licensing process, a licensure analyst will look over the application and all the documents that go with it to make sure that all the information is correct. A licensing analyst will ask for more information if the paperwork you have already sent isn’t complete or has mistakes.

Stage 1 – Pre-Licensure (Texas medical license Application)

  • On the first business day after you apply, look for an email from us with your LIST username and password.
  • Send in the items that are on the LIST tab for “Lacking Reasons.” Based on your application, these are the things we expect you to send or finish.
  • Use LIST to keep track of when the items arrived.
  • Most of the time, extra things will be needed later. Don’t be afraid! We’d expect that. First, we want to make sure you know the basics.

During pre-licensure, the documents needed are based on the standard requirements for a license and the information given with the application. Please note that documents are not checked for content during the pre-licensure stage. Once an application has been moved to the licensure stage, more information may be needed.

If you need to change the type of license for an application that has already been sent, please contact Board staff through the LIST portal to ask for an update. LIST can be found at the link https://list.tmb.state.tx.us/Default.aspx. If you can’t log in, please call (512) 305-7030 or send an email to Screen-CIC@tmb.state.tx.us to get help.

Stage 2 – Licensing

  • You have sent in all of the documents needed for your Pre-Licensure application.
  • A licensing analyst has been given your application.
  • Check LIST often. In the “Lacking Reasons” section, your licensing analyst will list any requests for extra items.

The time it takes to process an application depends on how complicated it is. When the applicant has sent in all of the initial documents and moved on to the licensing stage, the processing time clock starts. Answering “yes” to any of the “Professionalism” questions on the application or not following the instructions when submitting documentation can make the processing time longer. But if you don’t answer application questions honestly, it could be considered that you lied on your application. This will make it take longer for your application to be processed and the Board could take action against you.

In FY 17, it took an average of 41 days to finish an application once it reached the licensing stage.
