In accordance with Section 3 of the Social Assistance Act, SASSA is the Department of Social Development Agency body responsible for administering social assistance. SASSA provides a variety of social subsidies to South Africans, ranging from care dependent and child support to disability and veterans of war.

Recently, the department established the Covid-19 R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant, also known as the SRD R350 program. This is a grant of R350 per month for six months to be granted to unemployed individuals who do not receive any other type of income, social grant, or UIF payment.

How to Check SASSA Balance USSD code

With your phone, you can check your SASSA balance by following the instructions below.

  •  Dial *120*3210# on your telephone
  • And then follow the instruction

If the above USSD code and balance check did not work, try the following:

  • Dial *120*69277# on your phone
  • Follow each step carefully
  • You should then receive an SMS notification

You can check your SASSA status using WhatsApp on your cellular phone:

  • Send the word “SASSA” to the Sassa WhatsApp number – 082 046 8553
  • Reply with the word “Status“
  •  if you have reference number Reply “Yes”.
  • Reply with your mobile number you used when you applied for the grant.
  • Reply with your reference number.

Eligibility Criteria For the R350 SRD Grant

If you reside in South Africa, you need only meet the following requirements to qualify for the SRD grant:

  • You must be between the ages of 18 and 60.
  • Per month, you cannot earn more than R624.
  • You must be unemployed and not getting any other form of financial assistance.

SASSA Status Pending

  • About the “status pending notice,” SASSA explained that it occurs when payments for the new cycle are delayed.
  • Payments could potentially be discontinued if the eligibility requirements altered.
  • However, these payments would be sent on a monthly basis, rather than all at once.
  • Moreover, multiple payments could be made in a single month, but no recipient would get two R350 grants.
  • So, you should continue to check your SASSA status until you no longer see the “SASSA status pending” notification.
